Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create a unique building in Minecraft using various blocks and design elements, demonstrating creativity and an understanding of spatial concepts.

Materials and Prep

  • Minecraft game installed and ready to play
  • A computer or gaming console to play Minecraft
  • A notebook or digital document for planning
  • Pencil or digital drawing tool for sketches

Before the lesson, ensure that the student has access to Minecraft and is familiar with the basic controls. It might help to have a few ideas or themes in mind for what they want to build.

Activities

  • Brainstorming Session:

Start with a brainstorming session where the student can think of different types of buildings they want to create, like a castle, a treehouse, or a spaceship. Encourage them to write down their ideas and choose one to focus on.

  • Sketching the Design:

Once they've chosen a building idea, have them sketch their design on paper or digitally. This will help them visualize their project and plan out the layout before building it in Minecraft.

  • Building Time:

Set a timer for a building session where the student can start creating their structure in Minecraft. Encourage them to use different materials and be creative with their designs!

  • Show and Tell:

After building, have a "show and tell" session where the student can give a tour of their creation in Minecraft, explaining their design choices and the materials they used.

Talking Points

  • "What kind of building do you want to create today? Think about your favorite things!"
  • "Sketching your idea can help you see what you want before you start building."
  • "In Minecraft, you can use all sorts of blocks! What materials do you think will look good for your building?"
  • "Remember, it’s okay if your building doesn’t turn out exactly how you imagined. The important part is to have fun!"
  • "Can you tell me why you chose that design? What makes it special to you?"
  • "How did you decide where to put your doors and windows? That’s a big part of making a building look nice!"
  • "What was the most fun part of building for you? Did you learn anything new?"
  • "Let’s think about what you might want to build next time! Any ideas?"
