Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand basic mathematical concepts through practical applications in dog care, while also enhancing their English language skills by discussing and writing about their experiences and knowledge related to dog care.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for writing
  • Calculator (if needed for math calculations)
  • Access to a dog (if available) for practical demonstrations
  • Dog care resources (books, articles, or online resources for reference)

Before the lesson, it is helpful to gather any resources related to dog care, such as feeding guidelines, exercise needs, and care routines.

Activities

  • Dog Care Budgeting:

The student will create a monthly budget for dog care, including food, grooming, and veterinary expenses. They will research average costs and practice basic addition and subtraction to manage their budget effectively.

  • Daily Schedule Creation:

The student will design a daily schedule for caring for a dog, including feeding times, walks, playtime, and training sessions. This will help them practice time management and organizational skills.

  • Writing a Dog Care Guide:

The student will write a short guide on how to care for a dog, incorporating both English writing skills and their knowledge of dog care. They can include sections on feeding, exercise, grooming, and health care.

  • Math in Dog Training:

The student will create a simple training regimen that includes counting commands and rewards. For example, they can plan to teach a dog a certain number of commands each week and track their progress with math.
