Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic concepts to calculate distances, speeds, and times related to monster trucks and hot wheels.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencil
- Calculator (optional)
- Knowledge of basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
Activities
-
Activity 1: Monster Truck Distances
Imagine you are at a monster truck rally. Measure the distance from the starting point to the finish line using a ruler or measuring tape. Write down the distance in feet.
Now, calculate the distance in inches and yards. Remember that 1 foot is equal to 12 inches and 3 feet is equal to 1 yard.
-
Activity 2: Hot Wheels Speed
Choose a hot wheels car from your collection. Measure the length of the car in inches. Time how long it takes for the car to travel a certain distance (e.g., from one end of a table to the other).
Using the distance and time measurements, calculate the speed of the hot wheels car in inches per second and miles per hour. Remember that speed is calculated by dividing distance by time.
Seventh Grade Talking Points
