Objective

By the end of this lesson, Maisie will be able to identify different music genres, describe how music makes her feel, and understand the basic elements of a song such as melody, rhythm, and lyrics.

Materials and Prep

  • Access to a variety of music genres (classical, pop, rock, jazz, etc.)
  • A comfortable space to listen to music
  • A notebook and pencil for jotting down thoughts and feelings about the music
  • Basic knowledge of music terms like melody, rhythm, and lyrics will be helpful

Activities

  • Genre Exploration:

Maisie will listen to short clips from different music genres. After each clip, she will write down which genre it is and how it makes her feel.

  • Feelings Chart:

Maisie will create a feelings chart where she can draw or write words that describe how different songs make her feel. This will help her connect emotions with music.

  • Song Structure Discovery:

Maisie will choose her favorite song and listen to it closely. She will identify the different parts of the song (verse, chorus, bridge) and write them down.

  • Music and Movement:

While listening to a lively song, Maisie will dance or move around to express how the music makes her feel. This activity helps her connect physically with the rhythm.

  • "How does the rhythm of the song make you want to move? Do you feel like dancing or just relaxing?"
  • "What instruments do you hear in this song? Can you name them?"
  • "Why do you think lyrics are important in a song? How do they tell a story or convey feelings?"
  • "If you could create your own song, what would it be about? What feelings would you want to express?"
  • "How does listening to music compare to playing an instrument? Which do you think is more fun?"
  • "What is your favorite part of the song? Is it the melody, the lyrics, or something else?"
  • "How does music change your mood? Can you think of a time when a song really cheered you up?"
