Objective

By the end of this lesson, Maisie will be able to identify different music genres and express her feelings about various songs. She will also learn to describe the elements of music that make her enjoy a particular piece.

Materials and Prep

  • Access to a music streaming service or a collection of songs (any genre).
  • A comfortable space to listen to music without distractions.
  • Paper and colored pencils for drawing or writing notes.

Before the lesson, prepare a playlist of different genres such as pop, classical, jazz, rock, and country. Ensure the music is age-appropriate and engaging for Maisie.

Activities

  • Genre Exploration:

Play a short clip from each of the selected genres. After each clip, ask Maisie to describe what she hears and how it makes her feel. Encourage her to share her favorite parts of each song.

  • Feelings and Music:

Have Maisie listen to a song and then draw or write about the emotions it evokes. Ask her to create a "Mood Chart" with colors representing different feelings she associates with the music.

  • Song Storytelling:

Choose a song with lyrics and listen to it together. Discuss the story or message behind the song. Ask Maisie to create her own short story inspired by the song's theme.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think makes this music different from the last one we listened to?"
  • "Can you describe how this song makes you feel? Is it happy, sad, or something else?"
  • "What instruments do you hear in this piece? Can you name them?"
  • "How would you describe the tempo of this song? Is it fast, slow, or somewhere in between?"
  • "Why do you think people listen to music? What do you love about it?"
  • "If you could create your own song, what would it be about? What instruments would you use?"
  • "Do you think music can tell a story? Why or why not?"
  • "How does music change the way we feel about different moments in our lives?"
  • "What’s your favorite song right now? What do you love about it?"
