Objective

By the end of this lesson, Maisie will be able to identify, count, and perform basic math operations using real Australian coins. She will also engage in creative activities that reinforce her understanding of money and its value.

Materials and Prep

  • Real Australian coins (5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1, $2)
  • Paper and pencil for note-taking and calculations
  • Access to a table or flat surface for activities

Before the lesson, ensure that Maisie has a good understanding of coin values and is comfortable handling money. Familiarize her with the different coins she will be using.

Activities

  • Coin Identification Game: Start by laying out all the coins. Ask Maisie to name each coin and its value. Then, mix them up and see how quickly she can identify them again. This will help her become familiar with the coins.

  • Counting Coins: Give Maisie a set amount of coins (e.g., 10 coins) and ask her to count their total value. She can group them by type to make counting easier. This activity will reinforce her counting and addition skills.

  • Coin Addition and Subtraction: Create simple math problems using the coins. For example, "If you have 2 x $1 coins and you buy a toy for $1.50, how much money do you have left?" This will help her practice addition and subtraction in a practical context.

  • Shopping Simulation: Set up a mini-shop where Maisie can "buy" items with her coins. Create price tags for items using different coin values. This fun activity will help her understand the concept of spending and making change.

Talking Points

  • "What is the value of each coin? Let's look at the 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1, and $2 coins together!"
  • "How can we group the coins to make counting easier? Grouping by type can help us add them up faster!"
  • "If I give you 3 coins of 20c, how much money do you have? Let's count together!"
  • "When you buy something, how do you know if you have enough money? Let's calculate the total cost!"
  • "What happens if you have to give change? How do you figure that out?"
  • "Why is it important to know the value of coins? It helps us make smart choices when we shop!"
  • "Can you think of a time when you used money? What did you buy?"
  • "How does using real coins help us understand money better? It makes learning fun and practical!"
  • "What do you think is the best way to save money? We can use our coins to save for something special!"
  • "How do you feel about math when we use coins? Does it make it more interesting?"
