Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify several capital cities around the world and locate them on a world map. They will also learn fun facts about each capital city, enhancing their understanding of geography.

Materials and Prep

  • World map (can be drawn or printed)
  • Pencil or colored markers
  • Notebook or paper for notes
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research (optional)

Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with a few capital cities and their countries. This will help guide the student during their research and activities.

Activities

  • Map Drawing: Ask the student to draw a simple world map. They can mark where they live and then choose 5 capital cities to research. They will draw a small dot or star to represent each capital city on their map.

  • Capital City Facts: Have the student pick one capital city and write down 3 fun facts about it. They can use a computer or tablet to find interesting information. For example, what is the capital known for? What language do people speak there?

  • Capital City Quiz: Create a fun quiz where the student can ask you questions about the capital cities they learned. For example, “What is the capital of France?” You can take turns asking and answering questions.

  • Art Project: The student can create a postcard from one of the capital cities they learned about. They can draw a picture representing the city and write a short message as if they are sending it to a friend.
