Objective

By the end of this lesson, Leisline will understand the importance of healthy eating and nutrition, be able to identify different food groups, and learn how to make balanced meal choices. This lesson will also encourage her to think creatively about incorporating nutritious foods into her daily meals.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and colored pencils or markers
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research (optional)
  • Food magazines or printed images of healthy foods (optional)
  • Simple recipe ingredients (choose based on preferences)

Before the lesson, it’s helpful to have a basic understanding of the food pyramid or MyPlate guidelines to discuss the different food groups. Prepare any ingredients needed for the cooking activity if you choose to do it.

Activities

  1. Food Group Exploration:

Leisline will research and create a colorful poster that illustrates the five food groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins, and dairy. She can use magazines or print images to represent each group and write down examples of healthy foods from each category.

  2. Healthy Meal Planning:

Leisline will plan a balanced meal using at least three different food groups. She will write down the ingredients and explain why she chose each item, focusing on nutritional benefits.

  3. Cooking Activity:

If possible, Leisline will prepare a simple healthy recipe together. This could be a fruit salad, vegetable stir-fry, or a smoothie. This hands-on activity will reinforce what she has learned about healthy eating.

  4. Food Journal:

Leisline will start a food journal for the week, noting what she eats each day and categorizing the foods into the five food groups. At the end of the week, she can reflect on her eating habits and identify areas for improvement.
