Objective

By the end of this lesson, Kiddo will have a deeper understanding of the themes, characters, and plot developments in "Robinwood" through engaging hands-on activities, enhancing both comprehension and enjoyment of the text.

Materials and Prep

  • Copy of "Robinwood" (one chapter at a time)
  • Notebook and pen/pencil for notes and reflections
  • Art supplies (colored pencils, markers, paper)
  • Access to a space for physical activities (like a backyard or park)
  • Timer (for timed activities)

Before the lesson, ensure that Kiddo has read the assigned chapter and is prepared to discuss its content. Familiarize yourself with key themes and characters in the chapter to facilitate meaningful discussions.

Activities

  1. Character Charades:

Kiddo will choose a character from the chapter and act out their traits or key actions without speaking, while you guess who it is. This fun activity encourages understanding of character motivations and personality.

  2. Theme Collage:

Using art supplies, Kiddo will create a collage that represents the main themes of the chapter. This hands-on activity allows for creative expression and a deeper connection to the text.

  3. Plot Relay Race:

Set up a relay race where each station represents a key event from the chapter. At each station, Kiddo will need to summarize what happened and its significance. This combines physical activity with comprehension.

  4. Reflective Journal Entry:

After completing the activities, Kiddo will write a journal entry reflecting on what they learned, how they felt about the characters, and any questions they still have. This encourages critical thinking and personal connection to the material.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think motivates the main character's actions in this chapter?"
  • "Can you identify any themes that are starting to emerge? How do they relate to real life?"
  • "How do the events in this chapter influence the overall story? What might happen next?"
  • "Which character do you relate to the most, and why?"
  • "What was your favorite part of this chapter? What made it stand out to you?"
  • "How does the setting impact the story? Can you visualize where the events are taking place?"
