Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and describe various Halloween-themed objects by feeling them in a box. This hands-on activity will enhance their sensory exploration and vocabulary skills while fostering a fun and engaging learning environment.
Materials and Prep
- A box (any size will do)
- Halloween-themed objects (bat, spider, worms, pinecone)
- Optional: a blindfold (to enhance the guessing experience)
Before the lesson, gather all the objects and place them in the box. Make sure the items are safe to touch and not too scary for a 4-year-old. Explain to the child that we will be using our sense of touch to guess what is inside the box.
Activities
- Guessing Game: The child will take turns reaching into the box to feel an object without looking. They will then try to guess what it is based on how it feels.
- Show and Tell: After guessing, the child can pull out the object and share what they think about it. They can say if they like it or if it scares them.
- Story Time: After all objects have been revealed, create a short Halloween story using the items. For example, "Once upon a time, a friendly bat and a silly spider went on an adventure..."
Encourage the child to describe the texture, shape, and size of the object they feel. Ask questions like, "Does it feel smooth or bumpy?"
This will help them express their feelings and thoughts about each item, promoting language development.
This activity encourages creativity and storytelling skills while keeping the Halloween theme alive.
Talking Points
- "What do you think is in the box? Can you feel something funny?"
- "How does it feel? Is it soft, hard, or maybe a little slimy?"
- "Let's pull it out and see! What do you think it is? Is it scary or silly?"
- "Can you make up a story about the things we found in the box? What do you think they do at Halloween?"
