Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the basics of game design by creating their own simple game in Roblox, while also learning about teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
Materials and Prep
- Access to a computer with Roblox Studio installed.
- A Roblox account (if not already created).
- Notepad or digital document for brainstorming ideas.
- Basic understanding of how to navigate Roblox Studio (tutorials available online if needed).
Activities
-
Brainstorming Game Ideas
The student will spend 15 minutes coming up with a unique game idea. They can think about their favorite games and what makes them fun. Encourage them to write down their thoughts and sketch out a basic layout of their game.
-
Creating the Game Environment
Using Roblox Studio, the student will spend 30 minutes building the environment for their game. They can use various tools to create landscapes, buildings, and obstacles. Remind them to think about how their environment can make the game more exciting!
-
Adding Game Mechanics
In this 30-minute activity, the student will learn how to add basic scripts to create game mechanics, like points or timers. This is where they can make their game interactive and fun for players!
-
Playtesting
Finally, the student will spend 15 minutes testing their game. They can invite family members to play and give feedback. This will help them understand how players interact with their game and what improvements can be made.
Talking Points
- "What is your favorite game on Roblox and why do you like it?"
- "When creating your game, think about what makes it fun. Is it the challenges, the story, or the characters?"
- "How can you make your game unique? What special features can you add?"
- "Let's think about how players will feel when they play your game. What do you want them to experience?"
- "After playtesting, what feedback did you receive? How can you improve your game based on that?"
