Objective

By the end of this lesson, Riley will understand the basics of starting a vegetable garden, including how to choose seeds, prepare the soil, plant the seeds, and care for the plants as they grow. Riley will also learn the importance of patience and responsibility in gardening.

Materials and Prep

  • Seeds of vegetables (like carrots, lettuce, or beans)
  • Small pots or a garden space
  • Soil (if using pots, make sure they are filled with soil)
  • Watering can or cup for watering
  • Sunlight (a sunny spot for the garden or pots)
  • Notebook and pencil for notes and observations

Before the lesson, make sure to find a sunny spot for the garden or pots. Discuss with Riley which vegetables they would like to grow and why!

Activities

  • Seed Selection:

Riley will choose which vegetable seeds to plant. Discuss the different types of vegetables and their growing conditions. Ask Riley why they chose certain seeds and what they are excited to grow.

  • Soil Preparation:

Riley will learn how to prepare the soil by mixing it well if using pots. Discuss the importance of good soil for healthy plants. Riley can feel the soil and describe its texture.

  • Planting Seeds:

Riley will plant the seeds according to the instructions on the seed packets. Teach them how deep to plant the seeds and how far apart they should be. This is a hands-on activity where Riley can get their hands dirty!

  • Watering and Care:

Riley will learn how to water the seeds gently without washing them away. Discuss how much water plants need and how to check if they are thirsty.

  • Observation Journal:

Riley will start a gardening journal where they can write down what they did each day and draw pictures of their plants as they grow. This will help them see the changes over time.
