Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to apply basic math skills using truck-related scenarios and enhance their reading comprehension through engaging stories about trucks.

Materials and Prep

  • Various toy trucks (or pictures of trucks)
  • Paper and pencil
  • Books or stories about trucks (can be made up by the student)
  • A timer (for timed activities)

Before the lesson, ensure the student has a comfortable space to play and read. Familiarize yourself with some fun truck-related stories to inspire the student’s reading activity.

Activities

  • Truck Math Race:

Set up a race track using toy trucks. Create math problems that the student must solve to move their truck forward. For example, "If you have 5 trucks and you get 3 more, how many trucks do you have?"

  • Truck Story Creation:

Have the student create their own story about a truck adventure. They can write or dictate their story, focusing on using descriptive language and proper sentence structure.

  • Truck Counting Game:

Use the toy trucks to practice counting. Ask the student to line up a certain number of trucks and then ask questions like, "If you add 2 more trucks, how many do you have now?"

  • Truck Vocabulary Challenge:

Introduce new vocabulary words related to trucks (like "engine," "cargo," "transport"). Have the student use these words in sentences or create a mini-dictionary.

Talking Points

  • "Math can be like a fun game! How can we use our trucks to solve problems?"
  • "Every truck has a story! What do you think happens on a truck's journey?"
  • "When we count our trucks, we are practicing math! Can you show me how many trucks you have?"
  • "Describing our trucks can make our stories more exciting! What color is your favorite truck?"
  • "Adding and subtracting with trucks is like playing a race! How fast can you solve this problem?"
  • "Let's make our own truck adventure! What happens next in your story?"
  • "Using new words helps us become better readers and writers! Can you think of a sentence with 'cargo'?"
  • "Every problem has a solution! How can we find the answer together?"
  • "Reading about trucks can take us on adventures without leaving home! What do you want to read about?"
  • "Learning is fun when we play! How can we make our math and reading even more enjoyable?"
