Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and create number sequences that are more advanced than simple patterns, using their creativity and interests to explore how numbers can be fun and exciting!
Materials and Prep
- Access to YouTube for watching educational videos on number sequences.
- Paper and colored pencils or markers for drawing.
- My Singing Monsters app or website for inspiration.
- Books from the Don't Let the Pigeon series for storytelling.
Before the lesson, prepare a list of fun YouTube videos that explain number sequences and patterns. Make sure to have drawing materials ready for the activities!
Activities
- Watch and Learn: Start by watching a fun YouTube video that explains number sequences. After the video, discuss what you learned and see if you can identify any patterns!
- Draw Your Sequence: Create your own number sequence and illustrate it! For example, if you choose the sequence 3, 6, 9, 12, draw three monsters for 3, six for 6, and so on. Be as creative as you want!
- Pigeon’s Pattern Game: Read a story from the Don't Let the Pigeon series. After the story, create a number sequence based on the number of times the pigeon did something silly in the book. For example, if the pigeon tried to drive a bus three times, create a sequence that starts with 3!
- My Singing Monsters Sequence: Use the My Singing Monsters app to create a musical number sequence! Count how many monsters you have and create a sequence based on their sounds or actions.
Talking Points
- "What do you think a number sequence is? Can you give me an example?"
- "Did you notice any patterns in the video we watched? What were they?"
- "How can we make our own number sequences? Let’s think of a starting number!"
- "Why do you think sequences are important? Can you find them in your favorite games or books?"
- "How did you decide what to draw for your sequence? What made it fun?"
- "Can you think of a time when you saw numbers in a pattern outside? Maybe at the store or in nature?"
- "What was your favorite part of today’s activities? Why did you like it?"
