Objective

By the end of this lesson, Gabe will understand the basic concepts of teamwork, strategy, and resource management through the lens of Fortnite. He will create a mini-strategy guide that he can use in his gameplay, enhancing his skills and enjoyment of the game.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper or a notebook
  • Pencil or pen
  • Access to Fortnite (optional for gameplay reference)
  • Knowledge of Fortnite's basic gameplay mechanics (building, looting, etc.)

Activities

  • Fortnite Strategy Discussion

Start with a discussion about what makes a successful Fortnite player. Ask Gabe to share his favorite strategies and what he thinks is important in a game. This will help him articulate his thoughts and understand different approaches to the game.

  • Build Your Own Strategy Guide

Using the insights from the discussion, Gabe will create a mini-strategy guide. He can write down tips for different scenarios, such as "What to do when you're in a build battle" or "How to survive the storm." This will help him think critically about his gameplay.

  • Teamwork Role Play

Engage in a role-playing activity where Gabe pretends to be a squad leader. He can practice giving commands and strategizing with imaginary teammates. This will help him understand the importance of communication and collaboration in a team setting.

  • Resource Management Challenge

Discuss the importance of managing resources in Fortnite. Create a simple game where Gabe has to decide how to spend a limited number of materials to build structures. This will help him grasp the concept of resource management in a fun way.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think makes a good Fortnite player? Is it skill, strategy, or teamwork?"
  • "Can you tell me about a time when teamwork helped you win a match?"
  • "Why do you think it's important to have a strategy before jumping into a game?"
  • "What resources do you think are the most important in Fortnite, and why?"
  • "How do you decide when to build and when to fight?"
  • "What are some ways to communicate with your teammates in a game?"
  • "Why is it important to keep an eye on the storm and plan your moves?"
  • "How can you use your mini-strategy guide during your next game?"
  • "What did you learn today that you can apply in your next Fortnite match?"
  • "How does thinking critically about the game make you a better player?"
