Objective
By the end of this lesson, ALEF will explore the textures and properties of sand through play, developing creativity and fine motor skills while learning about the science of sand.
Materials and Prep
- Sand (enough to fill a small container or sandbox)
- Small cups or containers (for measuring and pouring)
- Shovels or spoons (for digging and moving sand)
- Small toys or figures (like dinosaurs, cars, or animals for imaginative play)
- A flat surface or designated sand play area
Before the lesson, find a safe outdoor area or a spacious indoor setting where ALEF can play with sand without worrying about mess. Make sure to have a towel or mat to sit on for comfort.
Activities
-
Sand Sculptures:
Encourage ALEF to use the sand to create unique sculptures. They can make castles, animals, or anything their imagination comes up with! Talk about how adding water can help make the sand stick together.
-
Sand Sensory Exploration:
Have ALEF close their eyes and feel the sand. Ask them to describe how it feels. Is it smooth, rough, or grainy? This activity helps with sensory development and vocabulary.
-
Sand Pouring and Measuring:
Use cups to pour sand from one container to another. Ask ALEF to measure how many cups it takes to fill a larger container. This introduces basic math concepts in a fun way!
-
Imaginative Play:
Incorporate small toys into the sand play. ALEF can create a scene with the toys in the sand, like a beach or a desert adventure. This encourages storytelling and creativity.
Talking Points
- "What do you think sand feels like? Is it soft or rough?"
- "Can you make a tall sand castle? Let's see how high you can build it!"
- "What happens when we add water to the sand? Does it change?"
- "How many cups of sand do you think we need to fill this container?"
- "Can you tell me a story about the toys in the sand? Where are they going?"
- "What other things can we make with sand? Can we make a mountain or a river?"
