Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to count and identify the difference between numbers.
Materials and Prep
- Number cards (0-10)
- Whiteboard or paper
- Markers or crayons
Activities
-
Start by showing the student the number cards from 0 to 10. Ask them to count aloud with you, pointing to each number as you go.
-
Next, explain that we can find the difference between two numbers by counting how many numbers are in between. Choose two number cards and place them on the whiteboard or paper.
For example, if you choose the number 3 and the number 7, ask the student to count aloud as they point to each number, starting from 3 and ending at 7. They should count 4, 5, 6, 7. The difference is 4.
-
Now, let the student take turns choosing two number cards and finding the difference between them. Encourage them to count aloud and point to each number as they go.
-
For extra practice, create a simple number line on the whiteboard or paper and have the student place a marker or draw a line to represent the difference between two numbers.
