Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic concepts of multiplication and division using LEGO bricks. They will be able to create groups of bricks to visualize multiplication and use the same groups to understand division.
Materials and Prep
- LEGO bricks (various sizes and colors)
- Flat surface to build on
- Optional: a small container to hold the LEGO bricks for easy access
Before the lesson, make sure the student has a variety of LEGO bricks available. It’s helpful to have enough bricks to create groups of different sizes.
Activities
-
Group Creation: Have the student create groups of LEGO bricks. For example, if you say "3 groups of 4," they will build 3 separate groups with 4 bricks in each group. This visually demonstrates multiplication.
-
Building Arrays: Ask the student to create an array using LEGO bricks. For instance, they can create a rectangle that has 2 rows of 5 bricks. This helps them see how multiplication works in a visual format.
-
Division with Bricks: After building groups, ask the student to take a certain number of bricks and divide them into groups. For example, if they have 12 bricks, how many groups of 4 can they make? This introduces the concept of division.
-
LEGO Math Stories: Encourage the student to create a story using their LEGO creations that involves multiplication or division. For example, "I have 4 bags with 3 apples each. How many apples do I have in total?"
Talking Points
- "Multiplication is like adding the same number again and again. If I have 3 groups of 4 bricks, that's like saying 4 + 4 + 4!"
- "When we make an array, we can see how many bricks we have in rows and columns. This helps us understand how multiplication works!"
- "Division is like sharing. If I have 12 bricks and I want to share them into groups of 4, how many groups can I make?"
- "Every time we build with LEGO, we can tell a math story! What happens when we put things together or take them apart?"
- "LEGO bricks can help us see math in a fun way! It's like a puzzle where we can build and take apart!"
- "Remember, each time we group bricks, we are practicing multiplication, and each time we split them, we are practicing division!"
- "Math can be fun when we use our imagination! Let’s see how many different ways we can build with our bricks!"
