Objective
By the end of this lesson, students will have planned and created their own mini greenhouse using recycled materials. They will learn about the benefits and limitations of greenhouses compared to natural ecosystems, and will explore ways to transform their mini greenhouse into a self-sustaining ecosystem.
Materials and Prep
- Clear plastic food containers (e.g., takeout containers, large yogurt containers)
- Potting soil or garden soil
- Seeds (e.g., herbs like basil or small plants like lettuce)
- Small pebbles or gravel (for drainage)
- Watering can or spray bottle
- Plastic wrap (optional, for added humidity)
- Small insects (e.g., ladybugs or ants) for the ecosystem phase
- Small rocks or twigs (to create habitats for insects)
- Notebook and pen for planning
Before the lesson, ensure that students understand the importance of recycling and the materials they will be using. Discuss the basic needs of plants and ecosystems.
Activities
-
Research and Planning:
Students will research different types of plants that can grow in a greenhouse. They will create a plan for their mini greenhouse, including what plants they want to grow and how they will set it up. Encourage them to think about the needs of the plants (light, water, space).
-
Building the Mini Greenhouse:
Students will gather their materials and begin constructing their mini greenhouses. They will layer small pebbles at the bottom for drainage, add soil, and plant their seeds. They can cover the top with plastic wrap to create humidity if desired.
-
Transforming into an Ecosystem:
Students will add elements to their greenhouses to mimic a natural ecosystem. They can introduce small insects, rocks, and twigs to create habitats. Discuss the roles of each element in an ecosystem.
Talking Points
- "What do you think are the main benefits of using a greenhouse?"
- "Unlike natural ecosystems, why do you think plants in a greenhouse need human intervention to reproduce?"
- "What elements do you think are necessary to create a balanced ecosystem?"
- "How do insects contribute to the health of a garden or ecosystem?"
- "What challenges do you think we might face in maintaining our mini ecosystems?"
- "How can we recycle and repurpose materials to help the environment?"
