Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and use simple sound blends and sight words to spell familiar words. The student will also have fun while practicing these skills through engaging activities!
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Crayons or markers
- Whiteboard or chalkboard (if available)
- List of sight words (e.g., "cat," "dog," "run," "big," "see")
Before the lesson, prepare a list of sight words to use during activities. Make sure to have a comfortable space for writing and drawing.
Activities
-
Sound Blend Fun
Say different sound blends out loud (like "bl," "st," "tr") and have the student repeat them. Then, ask them to come up with words that start with those blends!
-
Sight Word Art
Choose a few sight words and have the student draw pictures that represent those words. For example, if they choose "cat," they can draw a cat and write the word underneath!
-
Word Hunt
Hide flashcards with sight words around the room. Let the student find them and read the words out loud. For each word they find, they can earn a sticker or a small reward!
-
Story Time
Read a short story together that includes the sight words. Pause and ask the student to point out the sight words as you read. This helps them recognize the words in context!
Talking Points
- "Can you say the sound blend 'bl'? What words can you think of that start with 'bl'?"
- "Look at this sight word 'cat.' Can you draw a cat? What does a cat look like?"
- "Let's go on a word hunt! Can you find the word 'dog' hidden in the room?"
- "In this story, can you find the word 'see'? Point to it when you find it!"
- "How do you feel when you read your favorite words? Reading is fun, right?"
