Objective

By the end of this lesson, Celia will have explored various subjects through fun, interactive activities that incorporate American Sign Language (ASL) and Spanish, enhancing her understanding of art, language, history, math, music, physical education, science, and social studies.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and crayons for art
  • Storybooks in English and Spanish
  • Simple math manipulatives (like blocks or beads)
  • Musical instruments (like tambourines or maracas)
  • Space for physical activities
  • Access to nature for science exploration
  • Flashcards for ASL and Spanish vocabulary

Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with basic ASL signs and Spanish phrases related to each subject area. Prepare a comfortable and engaging environment for Celia to explore these activities.

Activities

  • Art Exploration:

Celia will create a colorful drawing of her favorite animal using crayons. While she draws, encourage her to describe her artwork in English and Spanish, and teach her the ASL sign for "animal."

  • Story Time:

Read a bilingual storybook together. After reading, discuss the story in both English and Spanish, asking her to sign key words in ASL to reinforce learning.

  • Math Fun:

Use blocks or beads to practice counting in English and Spanish. Ask Celia to show the numbers using ASL signs as she counts.

  • Musical Movement:

Play some music and encourage Celia to dance. Teach her a simple song in English and its translation in Spanish. Use ASL to sign the words of the song as you sing.

  • Outdoor Science:

Go outside to explore nature. Collect leaves or flowers and talk about them in English and Spanish. Teach her the ASL signs for "leaf" and "flower."

  • Physical Activity:

Set up an obstacle course and guide Celia through it. Use simple commands in English and Spanish, and sign them in ASL to enhance understanding.

  • Social Studies Circle:

Discuss where different animals live around the world. Use a world map to point out countries and teach her the names in English and Spanish, along with the ASL sign for "country."
