Objective

By the end of this lesson, Celia will have explored various subjects including Art, English, Foreign Language, History, Math, Music, Physical Education, Science, and Social Studies through engaging activities that incorporate American Sign Language (ASL) and Spanish. She will learn new vocabulary and concepts in a fun and interactive way.

Materials and Prep

  • Colored paper and crayons for art activities
  • Simple picture books in English and Spanish
  • Musical instruments (like shakers or homemade instruments)
  • Outdoor space for physical activities
  • Simple math manipulatives (like blocks or counting bears)
  • Access to ASL resources (like videos or charts)
  • History flashcards with images

Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with basic ASL signs and Spanish vocabulary that will be used throughout the activities.

Activities

  • Art Activity:

Celia can create a colorful collage using different colored papers. As she works, encourage her to name the colors in both English and Spanish (e.g., "red" and "rojo").

  • Story Time:

Read a simple picture book in English, then retell the story in Spanish. Use ASL signs for key words to reinforce understanding.

  • Music and Movement:

Play music and encourage Celia to dance. Introduce simple musical terms in both languages (e.g., "dance" and "bailar").

  • Outdoor Play:

Organize a game of tag or a simple obstacle course. Use ASL signs for movement words (like "run" and "jump") and count the number of times she completes the course in Spanish.

  • Math Fun:

Use blocks to build towers and count them out loud in English and Spanish. Introduce basic addition using the blocks (e.g., "1 + 1 = 2").

  • Science Exploration:

Go outside and explore nature. Collect leaves or rocks and discuss their colors and shapes in both languages.

  • History Flashcards:

Use flashcards to introduce Celia to historical figures or events, explaining them in simple terms in English and Spanish.

  • Social Studies Discussion:

Talk about family and community roles. Use ASL signs to represent family members and learn their names in Spanish.

  • Art: "What color is this? ¿Qué color es este?"
