Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will learn how to make cake pops, including mixing the ingredients, shaping the cake pops, and decorating them. They will have fun while learning about baking and enjoy a delicious treat they made themselves!

Materials and Prep

  • Cake mix (any flavor)
  • Eggs (as required by the cake mix)
  • Water (as required by the cake mix)
  • Butter or oil (as required by the cake mix)
  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk or spoon for mixing
  • Cookie sheet or baking pan
  • Cooling rack
  • Chocolate or candy melts for coating
  • Sprinkles or decorations (optional)
  • Lollipop sticks (or any stick-like item)

Before starting, make sure to preheat the oven according to the cake mix instructions and gather all materials in one place. Wash hands before cooking!

Activities

  • Mixing the Cake Batter: Start by measuring and mixing the cake mix with eggs, water, and butter. This is where the fun begins! Let the student help pour and mix the ingredients together in the bowl.
  • Baking the Cake: Pour the batter into a baking pan and place it in the oven (with adult supervision). While waiting, talk about what happens when we bake a cake and how it changes from liquid to solid!
  • Shaping the Cake Pops: Once the cake has cooled, break it into crumbs and mix it with frosting to form small balls. Let the student shape them into little cake pops. This is a great time for creativity!
  • Dipping and Decorating: Melt the chocolate or candy melts and dip the shaped cake pops into it. Let the student sprinkle decorations on top to make them look colorful and fun!

Talking Points

  • "Do you know what a cake pop is? It's like a little cake on a stick!"
  • "When we mix the ingredients, they change! What do you think will happen when we bake it?"
  • "Look at all these crumbs! We can make them into balls. How many can you make?"
  • "What color do you want your cake pop to be? Let's make it super colorful!"
  • "Why do you think we need to let the cake cool before shaping it? It’s too hot to touch!"
  • "What decorations do you want to add to your cake pops? Let’s make them look awesome!"
