Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will learn how to make delicious cake pops from scratch, including the process of baking, crumbling, mixing, and coating the cake pops, while also exploring creativity in decoration.
Materials and Prep
- Cake mix (any flavor)
- Eggs (as required by the cake mix)
- Oil (as required by the cake mix)
- Water (as required by the cake mix)
- Frosting (store-bought or homemade)
- Chocolate or candy melts for coating
- Lollipop sticks
- Sprinkles or edible decorations
- Baking pan
- Mixing bowl
- Microwave-safe bowl (for melting chocolate)
- Wax paper (for cooling)
Before starting, ensure that the baking area is clean and that all ingredients are measured out. Preheat the oven according to the cake mix instructions.
Activities
- Baking the Cake: Start by preparing the cake mix according to the package instructions. This involves mixing the cake mix with eggs, oil, and water, then pouring it into the baking pan and placing it in the oven. This is a great time to talk about the science behind baking!
- Crumbling the Cake: Once the cake is baked and cooled, the student will crumble it into a large bowl. Discuss how texture plays a role in the final product. Encourage them to think about how they can make the crumbles finer or coarser based on their preference.
- Mixing with Frosting: Add frosting to the crumbled cake and mix until it’s well combined. This activity allows the student to experiment with different amounts of frosting to see how it affects the consistency of the cake mixture.
- Shaping the Cake Pops: Roll the mixture into small balls and place them on a baking sheet lined with wax paper. Discuss the importance of size and shape in presentation.
- Coating the Cake Pops: Melt the chocolate or candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl and dip the ends of the lollipop sticks into the melted chocolate before inserting them into the cake balls. Then, dip the cake pops into the melted chocolate and decorate with sprinkles. This is where creativity shines!
Talking Points
- "Did you know that baking is a science? The ingredients work together to create a chemical reaction that makes the cake rise!"
- "When crumbling the cake, think about how the texture will change the way the cake pops feel when you eat them. Would you prefer a finer or coarser texture?"
- "Frosting acts like glue here! It helps hold the cake together. What do you think would happen if we used too much or too little?"
- "Shaping the cake pops is all about consistency. If they’re too big, they might fall off the stick. If they’re too small, they might not look as good!"
- "Decorating is where you can really express yourself! What colors or themes do you want for your cake pops?"
