Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create and decorate their own cake pops, understanding the basic techniques of baking, shaping, and decorating these fun treats. They will also learn about flavor combinations and presentation skills.

Materials and Prep

  • Cake mix (any flavor)
  • Eggs (as required by the cake mix)
  • Oil (as required by the cake mix)
  • Water (as required by the cake mix)
  • Frosting (store-bought or homemade)
  • Chocolate or candy melts (for coating)
  • Lollipop sticks
  • Sprinkles or edible decorations
  • Mixing bowl
  • Baking pan
  • Microwave-safe bowl (for melting chocolate)
  • Wax paper or parchment paper (for cooling)

Before starting the lesson, make sure to preheat the oven according to the cake mix instructions and gather all the materials needed. Familiarize yourself with the basic steps of baking a cake.

Activities

  • Baking the Cake

Start by mixing the cake ingredients based on the instructions on the cake mix box. Once mixed, pour the batter into a baking pan and bake it in the preheated oven. This will take about 25-30 minutes, so use this time to prepare for the next steps!

  • Making Cake Crumbs

Once the cake has cooled, crumble it into a large bowl. This is where the magic begins! You'll mix in some frosting to bind the crumbs together, making them easy to shape into pops.

  • Shaping the Cake Pops

Take small amounts of the cake and frosting mixture and roll them into balls. Place these on a tray lined with wax paper. Once all the pops are shaped, chill them in the fridge for about 30 minutes to firm up.

  • Dipping and Decorating

While the cake pops chill, melt the chocolate or candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl. Once melted, dip the end of a lollipop stick into the melted chocolate and then insert it into a cake pop. Finally, dip the entire cake pop into the melted chocolate and decorate with sprinkles before it sets!

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that cake pops originated from cake scraps? They are a great way to use leftover cake!"
  • "The key to a good cake pop is to make sure the cake and frosting are well mixed. It helps them hold their shape!"
  • "When melting chocolate, be sure to do it in short intervals to avoid burning it. Stir it well between each interval!"
  • "Experimenting with flavors is part of the fun! What if you tried a chocolate cake with strawberry frosting?"
  • "Presentation matters! Think about how you can arrange your cake pops for a party or a gift."
  • "You can also try using different types of sprinkles or edible glitter to make your cake pops stand out!"
  • "Remember, practice makes perfect! If your first batch doesn't turn out, don't get discouraged!"
