Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create delicious cake pops from scratch, mastering the techniques of baking, decorating, and presenting these fun treats. The student will also learn about the versatility of cake pops and how to customize them for different occasions.

Materials and Prep

  • Cake mix (any flavor)
  • Eggs (as required by cake mix instructions)
  • Vegetable oil (as required by cake mix instructions)
  • Water (as required by cake mix instructions)
  • Frosting (store-bought or homemade)
  • Lollipop sticks or wooden skewers
  • Chocolate or candy coating (for dipping)
  • Sprinkles or other decorations (optional)
  • Mixing bowl and spoon
  • Baking pan
  • Cookie sheet

Before starting, ensure that you have a clean workspace, and preheat the oven according to the cake mix instructions.

Activities

  • Baking the Cake: Begin by mixing the cake ingredients according to the package instructions. Pour the batter into a baking pan and bake until golden brown. This activity helps the student understand the baking process and temperature control.
  • Crumbling the Cake: Once the cake has cooled, crumble it into a mixing bowl. This step is crucial for creating the cake pop mixture, and it allows for discussion about texture and consistency.
  • Mixing with Frosting: Add frosting to the crumbled cake and mix until combined. This activity teaches the student about ratios and how frosting acts as a binding agent.
  • Shaping the Pops: Roll the mixture into small balls and place them on a cookie sheet. This hands-on activity is perfect for developing fine motor skills and allows for creativity in sizing the cake pops.
  • Dipping and Decorating: Melt the chocolate or candy coating and dip the end of each lollipop stick into it before inserting it into a cake ball. Then dip the entire cake pop into the coating and decorate with sprinkles. This part of the lesson emphasizes presentation and creativity.

Talking Points
