Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand and perform multiplication by 16 using number blocks. They will learn to visualize multiplication and develop a foundational understanding of how numbers can be grouped and counted.
Materials and Prep
- Number blocks (these can be drawn or represented with any simple shapes)
- Space to arrange the number blocks (a flat surface or a designated area)
- Prepared multiplication problems involving 16 (e.g., 16 x 1, 16 x 2, etc.)
- Knowledge of basic counting and how to group numbers
Activities
-
Number Block Creation:
Start by creating number blocks with the student. Each block can represent a number from 1 to 16. Use simple drawings or shapes to make the blocks colorful and engaging.
-
Group Counting:
Using the number blocks, practice counting in groups of 16. For example, group 1 block of 16 and count it out loud. Then, add another block and count again to see how many you have in total.
-
Multiplication Stories:
Create fun stories involving the number blocks. For example, "If you have 16 apples and you get 2 more groups of 16, how many apples do you have now?" Encourage the student to visualize the blocks as they solve the problem.
-
Block Race:
Set up a fun race where the student has to arrange the blocks in groups of 16 as fast as they can. Each time they complete a group, they shout out the multiplication fact (e.g., "1 group of 16 is 16!").
Talking Points
- "What happens when we have 16 blocks? Let's count them together!"
- "If we add another group of 16, how many do we have now? Let's find out!"
- "Multiplication is like adding the same number again and again. Can you show me how that works with our blocks?"
- "When we say 16 times 2, it means we have 2 groups of 16. Can you make 2 groups with our blocks?"
- "Every time we add another group of 16, we are making a bigger number. Let’s see how big we can go!"
- "Remember, multiplication is fun! You are doing amazing by using your blocks to learn!"
