Objective

By the end of this lesson, Emily will learn to measure her wrist size accurately, understand the importance of sizing in bracelet making, determine the correct amount of beads needed based on her measurements, and begin the design process for creating her own unique beaded bracelet.

Materials and Prep

  • Measuring tape or string
  • Ruler
  • Beads of various sizes
  • Elastic string or thread
  • Scissors
  • Design notebook or sketchpad
  • Pencil or pen

Before starting, ensure you have a variety of beads and the measuring tools ready. It's also helpful to have some examples of bracelet designs for inspiration!

Activities

  1. Measuring Your Wrist:

Emily will use the measuring tape or string to measure her wrist size. This will help her understand how to find the right size for her bracelet. She can mark her measurement on the string and then use the ruler to get the exact size in inches or centimeters.

  2. Calculating Bead Quantity:

Once Emily has her wrist measurement, she will learn how to calculate the number of beads needed. This involves understanding the sizes of the beads she has and how they will fit together on the elastic string. She will practice with different bead sizes to see how many she can use for her design.

  3. Designing the Bracelet:

Using her design notebook, Emily will sketch out her bracelet design. She can choose colors and patterns for her beads, thinking about how they will look together. This is a great opportunity to express her creativity!

  4. Creating the Bracelet:

Finally, Emily will string the beads onto the elastic thread according to her design. She will tie it off securely once she’s happy with her creation. This hands-on activity will help her see her design come to life!

Talking Points

  • "Why do you think measuring your wrist is important before making a bracelet?"
  • "Did you know that the size of the beads can change how many you need? Smaller beads mean you can fit more!"
  • "What colors or patterns do you think would look good together? This is your chance to be creative!"
  • "How does designing a bracelet compare to other types of art? What makes it unique?"
  • "What did you learn about the materials we used today? How do they affect the final product?"
  • "How do you feel about the bracelet you made? What would you do differently next time?"
