Objective

By the end of this lesson, Emily will have learned the basics of necklace making, including how to measure lengths for different necklace styles, create a stacked necklace design, and select colors and materials that complement each other. She will also understand key vocabulary related to jewelry making.

Materials and Prep

  • Beads (various colors and sizes)
  • Charms (optional)
  • Metal wire or string for necklaces
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Scissors
  • Pliers (if using metal wire)
  • Beading mat or flat surface for working

Before starting, make sure to have a clean workspace and all materials ready to go. Familiarize yourself with the tools and materials, especially how to use pliers safely if you are working with metal wire.

Activities

  • Vocabulary Introduction:

Start by introducing key vocabulary words such as "beads," "charms," "length," "design," and "color palette." Discuss what each word means and how it relates to necklace making.

  • Measuring for Length:

Teach Emily how to measure different lengths for necklaces. Discuss why different lengths are important for style and fit. Allow her to measure her neck and decide on the length she wants for her necklace.

  • Color Choice and Design Process:

Guide Emily through the design process. Have her choose a color palette and layout her beads and charms on the beading mat before stringing them together. Discuss how colors can affect the overall look of the necklace.

  • Creating a Stacked Necklace:

Show Emily how to create a stacked necklace design by layering different lengths and styles. Encourage her to mix beads and charms for a unique look. Help her string them together with the chosen materials.

  • Final Assembly:

Assist Emily in the final assembly of her necklace. Ensure she understands how to secure the ends properly, especially if using metal wire. Celebrate her creativity and hard work!

Talking Points

  • "Let's start with some vocabulary! Do you know what a bead is? It's a small, decorative piece that we can use to make our necklace."
  • "Measuring is super important! Different lengths can change how a necklace looks. What length do you think would look good on you?"
  • "Choosing colors is like painting! What colors do you like? Let's create a palette that makes you happy!"
  • "A stacked necklace can be really fun! It’s like wearing a little bit of everything you love. How many layers do you want?"
  • "Remember, this is your design! There are no wrong choices. Let’s make something that really reflects your style!"
  • "Using the right tools is important for safety. Have you used pliers before? Let’s practice together!"
  • "Once we finish, we'll have a beautiful necklace that you made yourself. How cool is that?"
