Objective
By the end of this lesson, Ember will be able to respond to different types of music and sounds, understand the importance of silence, and explore basic components of dance. She will also express her personal opinions about the dances and their purposes, developing her critical thinking and creativity.
Materials and Prep
- No additional materials are needed for this lesson.
- Be prepared to play music or make sounds using your voice or clapping.
- Know some basic dance moves to demonstrate, like jumping, twirling, or swaying.
Activities
-
Sound Exploration: Start by listening to different types of music together. Play a slow song, a fast song, and a song with a lot of beats. Ask Ember how each one makes her feel and what movements she thinks match the music.
-
Silent Dance: Have a moment of silence where Ember can think about how she feels. Then, ask her to dance to her own rhythm without any music. This will help her understand the importance of silence in expressing feelings.
-
Imitate the Sounds: Make different sounds using your voice or body. For example, clap your hands or stomp your feet. Ask Ember to imitate the sounds and create a dance that goes along with them.
-
Dance Review: After trying different dances, sit down and talk about them. Ask Ember which dance she liked the most and why. Encourage her to think about what purpose each dance might serve, like celebrating or expressing joy.

- "What do you think about this song? Does it make you want to dance? Why?"
- "How does your body feel when you dance to fast music versus slow music?"
- "Can you tell me what you think about dancing in silence? How does it feel?"
- "What kind of dance would you create to show happiness? Can you show me?"
- "Why do you think people dance? What do you think they are trying to say?"
- "What was your favorite sound we made today? How did it make you want to move?"
- "If you could create your own dance, what would it look like? What music would you use?"
