Objective
By the end of this lesson, Avalon will be able to identify and describe different dance styles, use dance vocabulary accurately, and express her thoughts about her own dance experiences as well as those of others.
Materials and Prep
- Notebook or journal for writing
- Pencil or pen
- Space to dance (living room, backyard, etc.)
- Access to a music source (like a phone or computer) for listening to different dance styles
Before the lesson, it would be helpful to have a list of different dance styles ready to discuss, such as ballet, hip-hop, salsa, and jazz.
Activities
- Dance Style Exploration: Avalon will listen to samples of different dance music (ballet, hip-hop, etc.) and identify the style. Afterward, she can choose one style to learn more about.
- Dance Vocabulary Match: Create a list of dance vocabulary words (like "choreography," "rhythm," "improvisation") and have Avalon match them with their definitions. This will help her understand the terms better.
- Choreography Creation: Avalon will create a short dance routine (about 1-2 minutes) based on the style she chose earlier. She can use the vocabulary words to describe her movements.
- Dance Reflection Journal: After dancing, Avalon will write a short reflection in her journal about how she felt while dancing, what she enjoyed, and any challenges she faced.
Talking Points
- "What do you think makes a dance style unique? Let's explore some different styles together!"
- "Can you tell me what choreography means? It's like telling a story with your movements!"
- "How does the rhythm of the music influence the way we dance? Let's listen closely!"
- "What was your favorite part of your dance routine? Why did you choose those movements?"
- "How did you feel when you were dancing? Dancing can express so many emotions!"
