Objective

By the end of this lesson, Sadie will be able to effectively ask and answer questions about a text, enhancing her comprehension and critical thinking skills. She will learn how to formulate different types of questions and provide thoughtful responses based on her understanding of the material.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen or pencil
  • Printed text (a short story, article, or excerpt)
  • Whiteboard or large paper for jotting down ideas
  • Timer for activities

Before the lesson, select a text that is engaging and age-appropriate for Sadie. Familiarize yourself with the content so you can guide her through the questioning process effectively.

Activities

  • Question Creation:

    Sadie will read the selected text and create a list of at least five different types of questions (e.g., factual, inferential, critical). This will help her practice thinking about the text from various angles.

  • Partner Q&A:

    Engage in a mock interview where Sadie asks you her questions, and you respond. Then switch roles. This activity will help her practice both asking and answering questions in a conversational format.

  • Question Sorting:

    Write down the questions on separate pieces of paper and have Sadie categorize them into types (e.g., open-ended, closed-ended). This will enhance her understanding of different question formats.

  • Textual Analysis:

    After discussing her questions, encourage Sadie to pick one question and analyze the text to find evidence that supports her answer. This will strengthen her ability to back up her responses with textual evidence.
