Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will gain an understanding of key figures in math history, particularly Mary Eleanor Spear and John Tukey, and how their contributions to data visualization, especially box-and-whisker plots, have shaped modern statistical analysis.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil and paper for note-taking and sketching
  • Access to a computer or tablet with internet access for research
  • Basic understanding of statistics and data visualization concepts

Activities

  • Research and Biography

The student will research Mary Eleanor Spear and John Tukey, focusing on their contributions to mathematics and data visualization. They will create a timeline of significant events in their lives and work.

  • Box-and-Whisker Plot Creation

Using a set of fictional data, the student will practice creating a box-and-whisker plot by hand. They will learn how to identify the five-number summary and visualize the data.

  • Discussion and Presentation

The student will prepare a short presentation on their findings about Spear and Tukey, including what they learned about box-and-whisker plots. They will share their presentation with a family member or friend.

Talking Points

  • "Mary Eleanor Spear was a pioneer in the field of statistics, particularly in the area of data visualization. Her work helped lay the groundwork for how we interpret data today."
  • "John Tukey is known for coining the term 'bit' in computing and for his development of the box-and-whisker plot, a powerful tool for visualizing data distributions."
  • "A box-and-whisker plot allows us to see the spread and skewness of data at a glance, making it easier to compare different data sets."
  • "Understanding the five-number summary—minimum, first quartile, median, third quartile, and maximum—is crucial for creating a box-and-whisker plot."
  • "Both Spear and Tukey emphasized the importance of visual representation of data, which helps to communicate complex information simply and effectively."
