Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create a beautiful watercolor painting of a rose, utilizing a variety of pink shades from their paint palette. They will also gain an understanding of the structure of rose petals and the beauty of botanical art through observation of nature.

Materials and Prep

  • Watercolor paint palette (with various shades of pink)
  • Watercolor paper
  • Water container (for rinsing brushes)
  • Brushes (preferably round brushes in different sizes)
  • Paper towels (for blotting)
  • Pencil (for sketching the rose outline)
  • Access to a rose or a good reference photo of a rose

Before starting the lesson, ensure that the student has a clear workspace and understands how to handle watercolor paints, including how to mix colors and clean brushes properly.

Activities

  • Observation Walk:

Take a short walk outside to observe real roses. Encourage the student to notice the different shades of pink and the unique shapes of the petals. They can take notes or sketch what they see.

  • Sketching the Rose:

Back at the workspace, the student will lightly sketch the outline of a rose on watercolor paper. Emphasize the importance of capturing the curves and layers of the petals.

  • Watercolor Technique Practice:

Before painting the rose, have the student practice various watercolor techniques such as wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, and color blending on a scrap piece of paper.

  • Painting the Rose:

Guide the student as they paint their rose, starting with the lightest colors and gradually adding darker shades for depth. Encourage them to layer colors to create a more realistic effect.

  • Reflection and Display:

Once the painting is complete, have the student reflect on their process. They can display their artwork and share what they learned about roses and watercolor techniques.

Talking Points

  • "Look closely at the rose. What colors do you see? How do the petals overlap?"
  • "When sketching, remember to capture the curves. Each petal has its own shape!"
  • "Watercolor is all about layering. Start light and build up to darker colors."
  • "Notice how the colors blend together on the paper. This is the beauty of watercolor!"
  • "What do you think makes your painting unique? Every artist has their own style!"
