Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a solid understanding of key statistical concepts such as median, average, weighted averages, range, and mode, as well as factors and multiples, and fractions. The student will also be able to apply these concepts in fun and engaging ways to solve problems and enhance their math skills.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pencil for taking notes and solving problems
  • Colored markers or pencils for visual activities
  • Printed worksheets on statistics, factors & multiples, and fractions
  • Timer for timed challenges
  • Calculator (optional for checking work)
  • Whiteboard or large paper for group problem-solving activities

Before the lesson, ensure that the student has a basic understanding of what averages are and has some familiarity with fractions.

Activities

  • Statistics Scavenger Hunt: Create a list of items around the house or yard and have the student collect data on them (e.g., number of books, colors of items). Then, calculate the mean, median, mode, and range of the collected data.
  • Factor Bingo: Make bingo cards with different numbers. Call out factors, and students mark their cards. This helps reinforce their understanding of factors and multiples.
  • Fraction Art: Have the student create a piece of art using fractions. For example, they can divide a canvas into sections and color different fractions of it. Discuss how these fractions can represent parts of a whole.
  • Timed Challenge: Set a timer for 10 minutes and give the student a mix of problems involving averages, factors, and fractions. See how many they can solve correctly within the time limit.
  • Group Problem-Solving: Use a whiteboard to tackle complex problems together. Encourage the student to explain their thought process as they solve each problem, promoting verbal reasoning skills.
