Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to confidently convert between fractions, decimals, and percents; understand and apply square roots and exponents; and solve problems involving percent change, all while developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills through engaging activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Graph paper
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Calculator (optional)
  • Whiteboard or large paper for brainstorming
  • Art supplies (colored pencils, markers, etc.) for creative activities

Before starting the lesson, ensure the student is familiar with basic arithmetic operations and has a good understanding of fractions and decimals. It may be helpful to review any terms related to percents, square roots, and exponents prior to the lesson.

Activities

  • Percent Scavenger Hunt:

    Create a list of items around the house or yard that can be represented as percentages (e.g., how much of a pizza is left, what percentage of a book is read, etc.). The student will find these items and calculate the percentages, presenting their findings creatively on a poster.

  • Square Root Art:

    Using graph paper, the student will create a piece of art that incorporates square roots. For example, they could plot points that represent the square roots of numbers and connect them to form a shape or design. This will help visualize the concept of square roots in a fun way.

  • Exponent Relay Race:

    Set up a series of problems involving exponents (e.g., simplifying expressions, converting to scientific notation). The student will solve each problem and then run to the next station to solve the next one. This will encourage quick thinking and reinforce their understanding of exponents.

  • Real-Life Percent Change Project:

    Have the student choose a product they like (e.g., a video game, clothing, etc.) and track its price changes over time. They will calculate the percent change in price and create a presentation or infographic to show their findings.
