Objective

By the end of this lesson, Emily will learn how to create her own bath bombs using simple household ingredients. She will understand the chemical reactions involved, the importance of measurements, and the fun of customizing her bath bombs with colors and scents.

Materials and Prep

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup citric acid
  • 1/2 cup Epsom salt
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 2.5 tablespoons oil (coconut, olive, or any cooking oil)
  • Essential oils (optional for scent)
  • Food coloring (optional for color)
  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk or spoon
  • Mold (silicone molds or muffin tin)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Gloves (optional, for handling colorants)

Before the lesson, ensure that all materials are gathered and that Emily understands the importance of measuring ingredients accurately for the best results.

Activities

  • Introduction to Ingredients

Start with a brief discussion about each ingredient. Explain what baking soda and citric acid do when they react with water, creating fizz and bubbles in the bath. This could be a fun chemistry moment!

  • Mixing the Dry Ingredients

Emily will combine the baking soda, citric acid, Epsom salt, and cornstarch in a mixing bowl. Encourage her to mix well and observe how the texture changes.

  • Adding Wet Ingredients

Next, she will slowly add the oil and any essential oils or food coloring to the dry mixture. Discuss how too much liquid can affect the fizzing reaction and how to achieve the right consistency.

  • Molding the Bath Bombs

Emily will pack the mixture tightly into her molds. Explain why it's important to compact the mixture well to ensure the bath bombs hold their shape.

  • Drying and Testing

After molding, the bath bombs need to dry for at least 24 hours. Discuss how patience is key, and maybe even plan a "testing" day for when they are ready!

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that baking soda and citric acid create a fun fizz when they mix with water? It's like a mini volcano!"
  • "When we measure our ingredients, it’s important to be accurate. Too much of one thing can change how our bath bombs turn out!"
  • "This oil we’re adding helps the bath bomb dissolve in the water and makes your skin feel nice and soft!"
  • "What colors do you want to use? We can mix food coloring to create our own unique shades!"
  • "Packing the mixture tightly in the mold is super important. It helps the bath bomb stay together when we take it out!"
  • "After we make these, we need to wait for them to dry. What do you think we can do while we wait?"
  • "Bath bombs are not just fun; they can also help you relax. What scents do you think would help you unwind?"
  • "Once they’re dry, we’ll get to test them out! It’ll be exciting to see how they fizz in the water!"
  • "Remember, science is all about experimenting. If we change the recipe next time, we might discover something new!"
  • "How do you think different ingredients might change the way our bath bombs work?"
  • "Making bath bombs is a cool way to combine art and science. What other projects can you think of that do that?"
  • "Let’s have fun with this! You can always customize your bath bombs to make them truly yours!"
