Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic concepts of video game design and storytelling, and they will create their own simple game idea using their imagination.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Coloring materials (crayons, markers, etc.)
  • Optional: A computer or tablet for research (if available)

Before the lesson, it would be helpful to think about the student's favorite video games and what they enjoy about them. This will help guide the activities.

Activities

  • Game Idea Brainstorming

Start by brainstorming different types of games the student enjoys. Discuss what makes those games fun and exciting. Encourage them to think of their own unique game idea, including characters, setting, and objectives.

  • Character Creation

Have the student design their main character on paper. They can draw it and write a short description about who the character is, what powers or abilities they have, and what their goals are in the game.

  • Story Development

Guide the student in creating a simple story for their game. Ask them to think about the beginning, middle, and end of their story. What challenges will the character face? How will they overcome them?

  • Game Rules

Discuss what rules the game will have. What can players do? What can't they do? Help the student write down the rules clearly so that others can play their game too!

  • Game Pitch

Finally, have the student present their game idea to you as if they were pitching it to a game company. Encourage them to be enthusiastic and explain why their game would be fun to play!

Talking Points

  • "What do you think makes a video game fun? Is it the story, the characters, or maybe the challenges?"
  • "Let's think about your favorite game. What do you like most about it? Can we use that idea for your game?"
  • "When creating a character, what special powers or traits would you want them to have? Why?"
  • "Every good story has a problem to solve. What problem will your character face in the game?"
  • "Rules are important in games! What are some rules you think would make your game fair and fun?"
  • "How can you make your game exciting? What surprises or challenges can you add?"
  • "When you present your game idea, remember to be excited! Why should people want to play your game?"
  • "What do you think is the best part of your game? How can you make that even better?"
