Materials and Prep

  • Barbie dolls and accessories
  • Paper and pencils
  • Coloring materials (crayons, colored pencils, markers)
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research (optional)

No specific prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Start by brainstorming ideas for a Barbie play and house design. Encourage the student to think about different rooms, furniture, decorations, and possible storylines.
  2. Once the student has a clear idea, have them sketch their Barbie play and house design on paper. They can include labels and descriptions for each room or area.
  3. Next, ask the student to write a descriptive paragraph about their Barbie play and house design. They should use vivid language and sensory details to bring their design to life.
  4. After writing the paragraph, the student can use coloring materials to add color and detail to their sketch, enhancing their visual representation of the design.
  5. Finally, the student can present their Barbie play and house design to the teacher or family members, explaining their ideas and reading their descriptive paragraph aloud.

Fifth Grade Talking Points

  • "Writing a descriptive paragraph helps us paint a picture with words. It allows the reader to imagine and experience what we are describing."
  • "Think about the different rooms and areas you want to include in your Barbie play and house design. Consider what furniture, decorations, and colors you would like to use."
  • "When writing your descriptive paragraph, use adjectives and adverbs to add detail and make your design come alive. Think about how the rooms look, smell, sound, and feel."
  • "Remember to organize your paragraph with a clear topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding sentence. This helps your reader follow your ideas."
  • "Once you have written your paragraph, you can add color and detail to your sketch. Use your imagination to make your design visually appealing and interesting."
  • "Practice reading your descriptive paragraph aloud to improve your fluency and expression. This will help you engage your audience when presenting your Barbie play and house design."
