Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to demonstrate an understanding of how whole numbers indicate quantity by counting objects, recognizing numbers, and associating them with the correct quantity.

Materials and Prep

  • No special materials are needed for this lesson.
  • Make sure the student is familiar with counting from 1 to 10.
  • Prepare to engage with the student through fun activities that involve counting and recognizing numbers.

Activities

  • Counting Game: Use your fingers to count from 1 to 10. Ask the student to show you a certain number of fingers and then count together to see how many fingers are up!

  • Number Hunt: Go around the house and find items to count, like toys, books, or snacks. For example, ask the student to find 3 toys and then count them together.

  • Draw and Count: Have the student draw pictures of different objects (like apples or stars). After drawing, ask them to count how many they drew and write the number next to their drawing.

Talking Points

  • "When we count, we are showing how many we have! Can you count your fingers?"
  • "Look at these toys! If I say '3', can you find 3 toys for us to count together?"
  • "Great job drawing! How many apples did you draw? Let's count them together!"
  • "Numbers help us understand how many things we have. If I say '5', how many do you think that is?"
  • "Counting is like a fun game! The more we practice, the better we get at knowing how many things there are!"
