Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create simple pictures and artworks that express their thoughts, feelings, and experiences using basic shapes and colors.
Materials and Prep
- Paper (any size)
- Crayons or colored pencils
- Markers (optional)
- Glue (optional)
- Scissors (optional, for adult supervision)
Before the lesson, ensure that the workspace is clean and organized. Gather all materials and prepare a comfortable area for the student to work in. Familiarize yourself with simple shapes and colors to help guide the student.
Activities
- Shape Collage:
Help the student cut out different shapes from colored paper (if using scissors) or draw them on paper. Ask them to create a collage by gluing the shapes together to form a picture, like a house or a tree.
- Colorful Emotions:
Discuss different emotions and ask the student to choose one. They will then draw a picture that represents that emotion using colors they feel match the emotion. For example, they might use blue for sadness or yellow for happiness.
- Story Time Drawing:
Read a short story or talk about an experience the student had. Ask them to draw their favorite part of the story or experience. Encourage them to add details that show what they loved most about it.
- Nature Art:
If possible, go outside and collect leaves, flowers, or small stones. Back indoors, the student can use these items to create a nature-inspired artwork by gluing them onto paper or using them to make prints with paint.
Talking Points
- "What shapes do you see around us? Let's use those shapes to create something fun!"
- "How does this color make you feel? Can you draw something that shows that feeling?"
- "What was your favorite part of the story? Let's draw it together!"
- "Look at these leaves and flowers! How can we use them to make our art special?"
- "Art is all about expressing yourself! What do you want to say with your picture?"
