Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will explore different forms of art using a variety of media, such as crayons, markers, and paint. They will learn how to express their creativity and experiment with textures and colors in a fun and engaging way.
Materials and Prep
- Crayons
- Markers
- Watercolor paints
- Paper (various types such as plain, textured, and colored)
- Paintbrushes
- Water cup for rinsing brushes
- Old newspapers or a plastic table cover for easy cleanup
Before the lesson, make sure to set up a clean workspace and cover the table with newspapers or a plastic cover to protect it from spills and stains.
Activities
-
Crayon Rubbings:
Place a textured object (like leaves or coins) under a piece of paper and rub a crayon over it to reveal the texture. This activity helps the student see how different textures can create interesting patterns.
-
Marker Blending:
Use markers to create a colorful picture. Then, with a wet paintbrush, blend the colors together to see how they mix. This shows how colors can change when combined.
-
Watercolor Resist:
Draw a picture with a white crayon on a piece of watercolor paper. Once finished, paint over it with watercolors. The crayon will resist the paint, creating a fun surprise effect!
-
Texture Collage:
Collect different materials (like fabric scraps, leaves, or paper) and glue them onto a piece of paper to create a collage. This allows the student to explore different textures and how they can be combined in art.
Talking Points
- "What do you think happens when we mix colors together?"
- "Can you feel the different textures of the objects we are using? How do they feel?"
- "Look at the patterns we made with the crayon rubbings! What do you see?"
- "What happens to the white crayon when we paint over it? Is it a surprise?"
- "Let’s talk about your favorite part of today’s art experiments! What did you enjoy the most?"
