Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the significance of the Advent season and learn about the key events leading up to the birth of Jesus through engaging activities and discussions.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and crayons or colored pencils
  • Advent calendar template (can be drawn on paper)
  • Storybook about the birth of Jesus (if available) or a simple written summary
  • Printable or drawn pictures of key Advent symbols (like a star, angel, etc.)
  • Timer or stopwatch for activity durations

Before the lesson, prepare the Advent calendar template and gather any storybooks or written summaries about Jesus' birth. Make sure the student has a comfortable space to work and create.

Activities

  • Advent Calendar Creation: The student will create their own Advent calendar, drawing or coloring pictures that represent each day leading up to Christmas. Each picture can symbolize a story or event related to Jesus' birth.

  • Story Time: Read a story about the birth of Jesus together. Discuss the main characters and events in the story, allowing the student to ask questions and share their thoughts.

  • Symbol Scavenger Hunt: Create a scavenger hunt around the house or yard where the student looks for items that represent Advent symbols (like a star for the Star of Bethlehem, or an angel for the angel that announced Jesus' birth).

  • Craft Time: Use the printable pictures of key Advent symbols to create a festive collage. The student can glue the pictures onto a larger piece of paper and decorate it with crayons and stickers.

Talking Points

  • "Advent is a special time when we prepare our hearts for the celebration of Jesus' birth."
  • "Each day of Advent can remind us of a special story or event that happened before Jesus was born."
  • "Do you know who the main characters are in the story of Jesus' birth? Let's talk about Mary, Joseph, and the angels!"
  • "What do you think the star meant when it appeared in the sky? It guided the wise men to Jesus!"
  • "Why do you think we celebrate Christmas? It's a time to remember how much God loves us by sending Jesus."
  • "Can you think of any other symbols we see during Advent? Like candles, wreaths, or gifts?"
  • "How can we share the joy of Jesus' birth with others during this special time?"
