Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will create a beautiful winter collage using foam materials to represent different winter themes, enhancing their creativity and fine motor skills through gluing and decorating with glitter.
Materials and Prep
- Foam materials (snowman hat, reindeer, Christmas tree, etc.)
- Paper plates (one for each collage)
- Glue (child-safe)
- Glitter (various colors)
- Table cover or newspaper (to protect the work surface)
- Paper towels (for clean-up)
Before the lesson, set up a workspace with all materials easily accessible. Make sure to have a protective cover on the table to catch any glue or glitter spills.
Activities
-
Foam Creation Station: Let the student choose their favorite foam pieces. Encourage them to think about how each piece fits into their winter scene. Ask questions like, "What do you want to make first?" and "How will the snowman look with a hat?"
-
Gluing Fun: Show the child how to apply glue to the foam pieces and stick them onto the paper plate. Encourage them to explore different placements. You can say, "Where do you think the reindeer should go? Maybe next to the Christmas tree!"
-
Glitter Sprinkling: Once the foam pieces are glued down, let the student sprinkle glitter over their collage. Explain how glitter can make their artwork sparkle like snow. Say, "Look at how shiny the glitter is! It’s like magic snowflakes!"
-
Story Time: After the collage is complete, invite the student to tell a story about their winter scene. Ask questions like, "What is happening in your picture?" and "Who are the characters?" to spark their imagination.
Talking Points
- "What colors do you see in the foam pieces? Can you find any blue or white?"
- "How does the snowman feel? Is he happy with his new hat?"
- "What do you think the reindeer likes to eat? Maybe some carrots!"
- "Look at all the sparkles! Isn’t it fun to make things shine?"
