Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the importance of physical activity through a fun and engaging Monopoly-themed game. They will learn how to incorporate movement into gameplay, enhancing both physical fitness and strategic thinking skills.

Materials and Prep

  • Open space for movement (indoor or outdoor)
  • Monopoly game board (or a drawn version on paper)
  • Markers or cones to represent properties and spaces
  • Timer or stopwatch
  • Notebook for keeping score and notes

Before the lesson, prepare the playing area by marking out different spaces and properties using the markers or cones. Ensure the student understands the basic rules of Monopoly and is familiar with the game pieces.

Activities

  • Property Dash:

Set up a series of markers or cones to represent different properties on the Monopoly board. The student will sprint to each property, complete a physical challenge (like 10 jumping jacks or 5 push-ups), and then return to the starting point before moving to the next property. This combines running with strength-building exercises.

  • Monopoly Relay:

Divide the playing area into two sections. The student will run to a designated spot, pick up a property card (or a piece of paper with a property name), and race back to the starting point. After collecting a set number of properties, they can take a break and discuss their strategy for building their Monopoly empire.

  • Chance and Community Chest Fitness:

Create a set of fitness challenge cards inspired by Chance and Community Chest cards. When the student lands on these spaces, they must draw a card and complete the challenge (e.g., "Do 15 squats" or "Run in place for 30 seconds"). This keeps the game exciting and physically engaging.

Talking Points

  • "Physical activity is important for keeping our bodies healthy and strong. Just like in Monopoly, where we build our properties, we can build our fitness!"
  • "Incorporating movement into our games can make them more fun and help us stay active. How do you feel after completing a physical challenge?"
  • "Strategizing in Monopoly is similar to planning our workouts; we need to think about our moves carefully to achieve our goals."
  • "What are some ways you can incorporate fitness into other games you enjoy? Let's brainstorm some ideas!"
