Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and describe connections between music, art, and reading.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencils
- Art supplies (crayons, markers, colored pencils)
- Access to a music player or musical instruments (optional)
- Pictures or examples of different types of art and musical instruments (optional)
Activities
-
Start by discussing with the student the different ways music and art can tell stories. Ask them to think about how a song or a painting can make them feel and what kind of story it might be telling.
-
Play a piece of instrumental music and ask the student to close their eyes and imagine a scene or story that the music could be representing. After listening, have them draw a picture of what they imagined.
-
Introduce the concept of lyrics in music and how they can tell a story. Choose a song with clear and meaningful lyrics and play it for the student. Encourage them to listen carefully to the words and think about the story being told. Afterward, have them write a short paragraph describing the story they heard.
-
Show the student pictures or examples of different types of art, such as paintings, sculptures, and drawings. Discuss how each artwork tells a story or conveys emotions. Ask the student to choose one artwork and write a short story inspired by it.
-
Wrap up the lesson by having a discussion about the connections between music, art, and reading. Ask the student to share their thoughts on how these different forms of expression can enhance our understanding and enjoyment of stories.
