Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have hands-on experience with three different science experiments that explore plant growth, electricity, and density. They will learn how to make predictions, observe changes, and draw conclusions based on their findings.

Materials and Prep

  • Seeds (any type, such as beans or flowers)
  • Small pots or cups for planting
  • Soil
  • Water
  • Light source (sunlight or lamp)
  • Battery (AA or AAA)
  • Wires (any type, preferably insulated)
  • Small bulbs or LED lights
  • Jar or clear container
  • Water
  • Oil (vegetable or any other type)
  • Various small objects (e.g., paperclip, cork, marble)

Before the lesson, make sure to gather all materials and set up the stations in a safe and accessible area for the student. Explain the importance of observing and recording their findings.

Activities

  • Station 1: Plant Growth Experiment - At this station, the student will plant seeds in different pots. They will change one thing at a time, like how much light or water each plant gets. They will make predictions about which plant will grow the best and keep a daily journal to observe and record their findings.

  • Station 2: Building Simple Circuits - The student will create a simple circuit using a battery, wires, and a bulb. They will experiment by adding more bulbs or changing the direction of the battery to see how it affects the circuit. They will learn about how electricity works through hands-on exploration.

  • Station 3: Exploring Density - In this activity, the student will drop various objects into a jar filled with water and oil. They will predict whether each object will sink, float, or stay in the middle. This will help them understand the concept of density in a fun and visual way.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think will happen if we don't give the plants enough water? Let's find out!"
  • "When we add another bulb, do you think it will get brighter or dimmer? Let's test it!"
  • "Why do you think some objects float and others sink? Let's make our predictions!"
  • "How can we change the light for our plants? What if we try sunlight and a lamp?"
  • "What happens if we turn the battery around? Let's see if that changes anything!"
  • "Can you guess which object will float and which will sink? Let's drop them in and find out!"
