Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic responsibilities involved in taking care of a dog, including feeding, grooming, and exercising. They will also learn about the importance of training and socializing dogs to ensure they are well-behaved companions.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and colored pencils or markers for drawing
  • A timer or stopwatch (for timed activities)
  • Access to a dog (if available) for practical activities
  • A notebook for jotting down notes and observations

Before starting the lesson, ensure the student is comfortable around dogs and has basic knowledge about them. If there is a dog available, make sure the dog is friendly and well-behaved.

Activities

  • Dog Care Chart: Have the student create a colorful chart that outlines daily responsibilities for taking care of a dog, including feeding times, walks, grooming, and playtime.
  • This activity will help the student visualize and understand the routine involved in dog care.

  • Grooming Practice: If there is access to a dog, practice brushing its fur and checking its ears and teeth. If not, the student can practice on a stuffed animal.
  • This hands-on activity will teach the student how to properly groom a dog and the importance of keeping them clean and healthy.

  • Training Games: Engage in simple training games, such as teaching the dog to sit or shake hands. If there’s no dog available, discuss training techniques and how to apply them.
  • This will help the student understand the importance of training and how it strengthens the bond between a dog and its owner.

  • Dog Care Presentation: Have the student prepare a short presentation to explain what they learned about dog care, including responsibilities and fun facts.
  • This will enhance their understanding and boost their confidence in sharing knowledge with others.
