Objective

By the end of this lesson, Chrystal will be able to understand the connections between maritime activities and global climate change patterns, using insights gained from the Fremantle Maritime Museum. She will be able to explain how human activities related to the ocean have contributed to climate change and discuss potential solutions.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for taking notes during the excursion
  • Access to the Fremantle Maritime Museum
  • Camera or smartphone for capturing images related to maritime history and climate change
  • Pre-visit research on maritime activities in Australia
  • Post-visit research materials (books, articles, internet access) about climate change and its global impacts

Activities

  • Excursion to Fremantle Maritime Museum: Start with a guided tour of the museum, focusing on exhibits related to maritime trade, fishing, and shipping. Take notes on how these activities have evolved over time and their impact on the environment.

  • Photography Project: Capture images of exhibits that relate to climate change, such as historical shipping routes or marine life displays. Later, create a presentation that connects these images to climate change concepts.

  • Research and Discussion: After the excursion, research the effects of climate change on marine ecosystems. Prepare a short presentation to share findings, focusing on how maritime activities contribute to climate change.

  • Creative Writing: Write a short story or diary entry from the perspective of a marine animal affected by climate change. This will help illustrate the real-world impact of climate change on ocean life.

Talking Points

  • "Maritime activities, such as shipping and fishing, have been a crucial part of human history. Can you think of how these activities might impact our oceans and climate?"
  • "Climate change affects not just the weather, but also ocean temperatures and sea levels. How do you think this might change marine life?"
  • "By understanding the past, we can better prepare for the future. What lessons can we learn from maritime history to combat climate change?"
  • "Every small action counts. What are some ways that individuals and communities can reduce their impact on the climate, especially related to maritime activities?"
