Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have explored various subjects through the lens of Fortnite, enhancing their understanding of art, language, history, math, science, and social studies while having fun engaging with their favorite game.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and colored pencils or markers
  • Notebook or journal for writing
  • Access to a timer (can use a phone or clock)
  • Basic math tools (fingers or a calculator for simple calculations)
  • Access to the internet for research (optional)

Before starting, ensure the student is familiar with Fortnite, its characters, and its gameplay mechanics. Discuss their favorite aspects of the game to get them excited about the lesson.

Activities

  • Art: Create Your Own Fortnite Character

    Using paper and colored pencils or markers, the student will design their own Fortnite character. They can sketch what their character looks like, what special abilities they have, and what kind of gear they would use in the game.

  • English: Write a Short Story

    The student will write a short story about their character going on an adventure in Fortnite. They should include a beginning, middle, and end, and think about what challenges their character might face.

  • History: Research a Fortnite Location

    The student will choose a location from Fortnite (like Tilted Towers or Pleasant Park) and research its history. They can create a mini-poster or a presentation about the location’s significance in the game and any real-world inspirations it may have.

  • Math: Calculating Victory Royales

    The student will calculate the average number of players in a game of Fortnite and discuss strategies to increase their chances of getting a Victory Royale. They can use simple math to analyze how many players survive each round.

  • Science: The Physics of Building

    The student will explore the science behind building structures in Fortnite. They can experiment with drawing different building shapes and discussing what makes them strong or weak, relating it to real-world engineering concepts.

  • Social Studies: Teamwork and Strategy

    The student will discuss the importance of teamwork in Fortnite. They can write down three strategies they think are important when playing in a squad and why communication is key.
